Problem: Customer has upgraded to Outlook 2003 and the desktop icon has disappeared.
Solution: Outlook 2003 does not create a desktop icon in order to be Windows XP certified. To access the properties dialog you can either right click on the icon within the start menu or open the Mail icon within the Control Panel.
If don't just want a shortcut but an email properties icon like prevous versions, it can be recreated by adding the following key to the registry.
1. Open the Registry Editor. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
2. Click Edit | Add Key and add the following key: {00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
3. Set the Default Value of this key to be: 3
4. Quit the Registry Editor. Refresh the desktop to see the restored icon. You may need to log off windows and log back on to see the icon.

Problem: Unable to delete blackberry email from device.
Solution:
Quick Diagnostics (1) Try removing the battery and reinserting it after 30 seconds. (2) Try loggging into the BIS via the web. From the home page, select Empty Deleted Items. This often resolves problems but if there is nothing in the deleted items, (3) On the device, try going to Message > Options > Email reconciliation > trackwheel > purge deleted email
Long Haul (4) Per KB-04470 on Blackberry.com, the symptoms suggest that the message list index is corrupt and the OS is unable to locate the message in the index for delete.
Backup the device and clear the device message database
Create a Backup: a. Open Blackberry Dewsktop Maanger and select Backup and Restore b. Click the Backup button. Save your backup file in a folder that you can access later c. Click Save. The backup process completes.
Clear the device message database: a. From the Backup and Restore window, select Advanced b. From the Handheld Database list, highlight the Messages database and click Clear c. Click OK when prompted with a warning message. The device message database is erased from the device.
Restore the messages to the handheld. |

Problem: While attempting Enterprise Activation, the blackberry activation progress cannot get passed Verifying Encryption. The message is: Activation Progress - 14% Activating... Verifying Encryption...
"An Error has occurred. Please contact System Administrator."
Solution: The workaround and easy fix is to do the Desktop Manager activation. For those remote without a computer, then Enterprise Activation might be the only way. The following steps should be completed by system administrators with access to the Blackberry Enterprise Server.
Open Blackberry Manager (1) Search and locate individual's account. Right click and select Edit Properties. (2) On the left column under Properties, select PIM Sync (3) On the right column, scroll down to the section Certificate Summary Data (4) For Synchronization type, instead of Device to Server click the drop down and select Bidirectional. (5) Hit OK and try again.
Activation Progress - 60%
Activating... Verifying Encryption... Encryption Verified Waiting for services... Services received. Your email address '

Problem: New Sprint Blackberry fails to send and receive. The Desktop Manager software was installed, configured, and pin enabled and registered on the Blackberry Exchange Server. The display on the blackberry indicates a 1x (lowercase). Solution: On the Blackberry device, go to Options > Network and go to the network selection mode. You can keep it at "Automatic" but click the track wheel to bring up an additional menu to select "Start Provisionining." The provisioning process takes about a minute or two to complete but the main screen should show an indicator of the 1x going to uppercase 1X. That indicates that your device is now recognized on the Sprint network.

Problem: "Decryption Failure Please Regenerate Key" is an error one may get on an Enterprise system with Microsoft Exchange. This happens when the encryption key on the device is different from what is on the Blackberry Exchange Server (BES). Solution: You must generate a new security key from the Blackberry Desktop Manager. This can only be done with an Outlook connection to the Exchange server and with the USB connection to the device. Notes: If the Blackberry Desktop Manager / Redirector Settings / Security tab has the security key set to automatic, the security key may expire while the customer is away from the office. To avoid this, set it to generate keys manually. |

Problem: Blackberry display shows ERROR 507.
Solution: This error occurs when there are no applications loaded. To clear the 507 error, the BB unit should be connected to the computer with Desktop Manager’s “Application Loader” running so you can load all the apps to the BB device. You may need to recycle the BB in the process of getting the CPU to communicate with the BB. |

Hidden OLK Folder |

In Microsoft Outlook, when an end user receives an attachment they really should save it to their hard drive before doing any further edits. Unfortunately, the reality is that many chose to open the attachment, make edits, then save it within their email. Sometimes they misplace the email or need to send the file to someone else and can't find the file they've been working on. Rest assured, the file is still on the hard drive but in a hidden OLK folder. Go to Start > Run > and type in %temp% and enter. An explorer box will pop up. Go to View > Explorer Bar > Folders and expland the folder LOCALS~\Temporary Internet File\OLK. Before you get ahead of yourself, this folder will not be visible via the normal Windows Explorer even when displaying hidden windows files. Microsoft has an explanation of Secure Temporary Internet folders at: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817878 |

Shift Key Password Problems |

I must have reset several thousand passwords in my career doing technical support over the phone. As passwords became more complex, it became more of a headache to support. When assigning a password to an individual user, make sure they are using the correct case. Make sure you're not using the shift key for the equal sign (=) or the minus sign (-). Also make sure you're using the correct case such as pressing the shift key for upper case. What I usually have the caller do is type the password into the User Name field so that they can't visibly see what they're doing wrong. This gets especially complex when dealing with smartphones such as blackberries. Usually the individual presses his password thinking they're numbers when they're actually letters. This is manefested when using the Blackberry Desktop Manager software which prompts for the blackberry password. The individual needs to type in the letters associated with the number pad on the mobile phone device. What I do is have the caller login to their blackberry device and compose a new test message. What they should do is type their password into the body of the message. This will reveal the letters they are using for the password. |

Blackberry Diagnostics and Quick Fix |

Before you call for support, here are things you can do to resolve a Blackberry problem if it's simply sending and receiving. Here I present a quick fix for any Blackberry problem that deals with sending and receiving - an elixir if you will. It's time tested and has solved a ton of incoming calls in my technical support career. I'll first start with some teaser diagnostics then work my way to the quick fix. - First, start with the basics. Make sure that wireless is on as indicated by the Antenna icon. Also make sure there is some level of reception indicated by the numbers of incremental bars. Connection may be intermittent if there is only one bar.
- Make sure the data connection is available on the Wireless Network. Depending on phone and carrier, this is indicated by a 1X, EDGE, GPRS, EV, or EDVO, etc.
- Remove the battery. Yes, this is the time tested method. The procedure is to turn the device over while on, remove the battery, wait about 30 seconds, then reinsert the battery. After the device boots back to the main screen, it may take up to a minute or two for mail to resume sending and receiving to the device.
If the above steps fail, then you probably need to call your respective help desk or carrier for support. |
